AI-generated Content: Is This The Future?
AI-generated content: is this the future?
What are people talking about these days? Or rather, who are they talking to? To be more precise, what are they talking to?
The most popular conversation partner these days seems to be an AI chatbot named ChatGPT.
“Talk to a machine?” I hear you cry. Why would people do that when we have so many ways to communicate with human beings?
Some of the reasons include:
- Saving time: AI can generate content much faster than us mere mortals.
- Being consistent: Humans have our ‘off days’ but AI can consistently produce high quality content.
- Saving money: For repetitive or routine tasks, using AI can be more cost-effective than hiring human content creators.
- Personalisation: AI can generate content tailored to specific audiences.
There’s no denying that ChatGPT has ‘caught on’. It’s estimated to have reached 100 million active users just two months after its launch (30 November 2022), making it the fastest-growing consumer app in history.
And it’s not going away! Nina Schick, author and advisor on generative AI, has projected that 90% of content could be created by AI by 2025.
How does it work?
ChatGPT and other tools create content through a process called Generative AI: artificial intelligence (AI) techniques that use statistical models, deep learning neural networks, and other machine learning techniques to learn from input data and generate content that’s similar — but not identical — to the original data.
Be careful what you wish for
We might all wish that technology would do our work for us so that we can have a shorter working week, but generative AI apps have pitfalls that enterprises need to be aware of. ChatGPT itself identifies the disadvantages as inaccuracy, ethical concerns [have you seen the Tom Cruise deepfakes?], limited context, and lack of emotional intelligence.
It also lists lack of creativity as a disadvantage and, in relation to this issue, I think I broke ChatGPT.
It claims that creativity is an advantage, saying: “AI-generated content can be highly creative and novel, as AI can explore and generate new ideas that may not have been considered by humans.”
But when I asked ChatGPT, “Will generative AI replace creativity?”, it replied, “There was an error generating a response.”
Can AI generate images and videos too?
Generative AI provides a solution to a genuine problem for enterprises: creating content does take a lot of time; in particular, videos.
So, can generative AI create images and videos? Indeed it can. DALL·E 2 is an AI art platform that creates images from short text phrases. There are a number of AI video generation apps emerging and, even if you would prefer to create your own videos, AI can play a significant role in saving time and money managing those videos.
How does Overcast use AI?
Remember the not-so-good old days when you had to spend hours trawling through tapes looking for a particular clip? Thank goodness those days are gone! Overcast’s Max Recognition uses AI and Machine Learning to identify people, objects, places, and events in videos and images, which will save you heaps of time.
We also provide Max Transcribe, which uses AI to transcribe the dialogue/voiceover in a video to generate captions, subtitles and audio.
